Curriculum Leader: Mr M Daffon

The original idea makes design distinctive, function makes it work and quality adds value

- Serge Zuev

Design and Technology is an inspiring, fun and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, students will design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own needs and the needs of others. They will acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

In Design and Technology (Materials Technology) Cove students will:

  • Learn about Health & Safety and how to keep themselves and others safe in the workshop
  • Learn about different tools and equipment and how to use them safely
  • Learn to design, make high-quality products.
  • Support each other and learn to work together.
  • Develop practical skills through the use of tools, materials and components.
  • Use knowledge and understanding to solve problems in real-life contexts.
  • Evaluate and test their own ideas.
  • Learn about sustainability issues.

Course Outline and Structure – Key Stage 3 (Year 7,8 and 9)

Key Stage 3 pupils will experience a rotational timetable of the different Design and Technology subjects. Each rotation lasts approximately 8 weeks allowing for pupils to develop their skills in 5 different areas.

During the Workshop (Materials Technology) rotation pupils are taught about Health & Safety in the workshop, we look at different tools and equipment and how to use them properly and safely, as well as looking at different types of materials. Pupils will get the opportunity to design and create their own product that they can take away with them. As Materials Technology is new at Cove School this year, all pupils will be working on the same project, to create a personalised keyring.
